Emanuel, Garcia take part in Chicago State mayoral forum

CHICAGO — Mayor Rahm Emanuel and mayoral challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia participated in a mayoral forum Wednesday night at Chicago State University.

With the runoff election less than two weeks away, Chicago State University realized the black vote will be crucial in the outcome. So on Wednesday, they were the site of the forum, which was hosted by the African-American Studies department.

Emanuel and Garcia did not interact with each other by design; each candidate had his own hour to address questions presented to them by the moderator, the audience and through Twitter.

Garcia took questions for the first hour, saying if he becomes mayor he’s determined to hire 1,000 new police officers to help curb crime on Chicago’s streets, namely on the city’s South and West Sides, where African-Americans predominantly reside.
